At Anand Singapore International School, we recently had the privilege of hosting an enlightening seminar for our preschool parents in cooperation with The ASIS Parent Support Group, led by the esteemed Dr. Sunita Raaj. Dr. Sunita Raj, a Mental Health Professionals and the author of the book "The Art of Believing," shared her profound insights on the pivotal role of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in early childhood development. Her talk not only resonated with the parents in attendance but also provided them with practical strategies to nurture their children's emotional well-being during these formative years.
Parenting: A Lifelong Commitment
Dr. Sunita Raaj began by emphasizing the true essence of parenting. "Parenting is not just about providing for your child’s physical needs," she explained. "It is about being a constant source of love, guidance, support, and education. Raising a child is a lifelong commitment that requires unwavering dedication."
She elaborated on how parents are the primary architects of their child's emotional and psychological foundation. By embodying empathy, patience, and understanding, parents can create an environment where their children feel safe, valued, and empowered to explore the world around them.
Understanding Emotional Intelligence
The core of Dr. Sunita Raaj’s seminar was centered around Emotional Intelligence, which she defined as the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and effectively utilize one’s own emotions and those of others. According to her, EI is not just a buzzword; it is a critical skill that shapes a child’s social skills, self-awareness, emotional regulation, conflict management, and even academic performance.
"Children with high Emotional Intelligence are better equipped to navigate the complexities of relationships, school, and life," Dr. Sunitaa Raaj explained. "They are more resilient, adaptable, and capable of managing their emotions in a healthy way."
Addressing Common Emotional Challenges in Preschoolers
Dr. Sunita Raaj also touched on some of the common emotional challenges faced by preschoolers, including anxiety, temper tantrums, and phobias. She provided valuable insights into how parents can recognize these issues and offered practical strategies for managing them.
"Anxiety in preschoolers often stems from fear of the unknown or changes in routine," she noted. "Parents can help by providing consistent routines, offering reassurance, and encouraging their child to express their feelings."
When it comes to temper tantrums, Dr. Sunita stressed the importance of staying calm and setting clear boundaries. "Tantrums are a normal part of development as children learn to navigate their emotions. Parents should acknowledge their child's feelings, but also gently guide them towards more appropriate ways of expressing themselves."
For phobias, Dr. Sunita Raaj recommended gradual exposure and positive reinforcement. "It’s important to address a child’s fears in a supportive manner, helping them to face their fears one step at a time."
The Most Important Takeaway: The Significance of the Preschool Years
As the seminar drew to a close, Dr. Sunita Raaj left the parents with one key takeaway: the preschool years are the most crucial stage in a child’s life. "It is during these early years that we begin to shape a child’s overall disposition, character, and values," she emphasized. "By fostering Emotional Intelligence, we equip our children with the tools they need to thrive not just in school, but in life."
Dr. Sunita Raaj's seminar was a powerful reminder that the role of a parent goes beyond traditional notions of caregiving. It involves nurturing the emotional and psychological well-being of the child, which ultimately lays the foundation for their future success and happiness.
We are grateful to Dr. Sunita Raaj for her invaluable insights and look forward to applying her teachings in our daily interactions with our children. As a community, we are committed to supporting our parents in raising emotionally intelligent, resilient, and well-rounded individuals.
